Martin Margiela was incredibly reluctant to create a diffusion line. As with much of the decisions with the brand that heralded success, it went against Martin's minimalist design ethos. The four stitches, MM6, graphic printed garments, were all met with heavy resistance from the designer, but eventually came to light as business decisions. However, Margiela did a diffusion line his way. MM6 was founded in 1997, initially using the same number label and was delineated by a single white stitch line. The garments featured the same top notch design and construction, but instead focused on elements of clothing that Margiela himself would wear. This jacket is no different, coming from the AW03 collection when Margiela still designed at the house. It's an elevated version of a military field jacket, complete with modular liner. The outer jacket features a herringbone cotton, that has picked up gorgeous fades over time, and features heavy YKK zippers and front pockets. The liner is cut almost like a kimono when worn open, with a soft V-shaped collar, cotton quilting and slightly shorter sleeves with a cutout chest pocket. The jackets combine via snaps throughout the interior but work well functionally individually too.
Shout out to Mo for tipping me off to this one. Thanks brother!
