Carol Christian Poell

SS01 "THREE REFRIDGERATED CELLS" UH-1148 COL6 DENIM TANK

Carol Christian Poell is first and foremost an enigma. Born in Austria to a family of leather makers, Poell began his journey early and was a near master of his craft by the mere age of 15. In a case of irony, his genius and prodigal status made him resent the fashion industry more and more, lambasting the mainstream focus on propoganda and promotion over craftmanship and personal significance within the garment. This negative feedback loop pushed Poell to embrace his status of an outsider, and pushed him to create more and more grotesque creations crafted to the highest tier, to an almost satirical degree. From ties crafted from human hair, to necklaces embedded with human teeth, to prosthetic titanium leather jackets, CCP is heralded as one of the darkest artisans of the modern era. Not only that, his obscurity and embracing of anonymity has played into his crafted universe, and makes his designs even more sought after. For Spring/Summer 2001, Poell pushed being weird to an unsettling degree. The show named "THREE REFRIDGERATED CELLS" was set in a public slaughterhouse on the fringes of Milan, where garments and accessories were strung up next to corpses of cattle (their skin of which was used to create leather and subsequently the garments), contrasted by a single, unblemished chair.

Quite dark but ultimately this tank is made from denim. It's a jinglet. A jest. A jank top. It's weird, and fits strange with articulated and disconnected arm holes. It is weird, and a bit of a meme, but the craftsmanship is evident. A previous owner has sliced the hem to allow for easier mobility around the hips.
