Rick Owens

SS12 "NASKA" Structured Bomber

Even a cursory look back at Rick Owens’s archive reveals that for most of his career, he refrained from using colour. Making his name as a Prince of Darkness, colours, if used, were often muted, grimy, and desaturated, barely distinguishable from grey. In this regard, NASKA, his spring-summer 2012 collection, was a landmark event. The colour “CORAL” was introduced to his womenswear show, a still earthy yet somewhat saturated burnt orange colour that proved to be the exclamation point on this collection, and would set the tone moving forward for more and more colour to be used. Complete looks were composed in various fabrications and textures in coral, a stark contrast to the monotone looks sharing the same runway. His penchant for architectural-inspired design remains strong, welcoming in a new era of iteration for Owens. This runway jacket from this collection was featured prominently in look 16, juxtaposed against a flowy silk dress. Multiple materials, including a slubby cotton canvas, wool knit ribbing, and silk are combined to create a signature Rick silhouette with strong shoulders, elongated arms, and a flattering body (which can be accentuated by the calf leather drawstrings at the waist. Not to skimp on quality in light of design, the construction of this garment is also something at which to marvel. Bias-bound seams are found throughout, with a half-body lining and sleeve lining too. A hidden button placket at the front and leather trims around the collar adds further luxe appeal.
